Interzone Festival

Festival of Actual Music
1997, 2001 – 2013
Artistic director

Interzone was a unique festival dedicated to contemporary and current musical cross-genre creativity held in Novi Sad, Serbia. The usual contents of the festival were concerts, workshops, theoretical lectures, presentations, musical installations, and conversations with artists/ discussions. Exhibitions, workshops, performances, documentaries about festivals/ musicians, etc. were accompanying the main program.

Interzone was created thanks to a group of artists who wanted to create a space for exchanging information about contemporary cross-genre music that was created on independent stages. The festival hosted musicians from almost all continents. 103 musical projects from 33 countries participated in the presentation, almost all from European countries. At the same time, several participants from other continents played music from Mali, Senegal, Australia, Cuba, America, Canada, Brazil, India, and Japan.

Since its inception, 286 male and 87 female artists have presented themselves to the audience at the festival. The audience had the opportunity to listen to music performances on 69 different instruments, from the most typical for Balkan regions, such as the guitar, violin, accordion, and drums. Traditional instruments from other continents, some less known, such as ngoni, mbira, kaval, charango, ប្រ្រ្រាង, ស្រ្រ្រ្រ, Indian tabla, diva, bon and more recently created zitraphone, tablophone, theremin, box flute, and many others were present.

In order to better understand the phenomenon of music, occasionally, whenever production opportunities allowed, a theoretical discourse on music would be introduced, so that the audience could also hear lectures or participate in workshops and discussions presented or led by eminent artists and theorists.

The festival program was occasionally expanded to include theater performances in which music was an equal and original element and documentaries about music, musicians, seminars, and workshops.
