IVANA INĐIN
(1964)
artist, activist, art therapist, performer, theater director, performing & visual arts teacher
BIOGRAPHY
Ivana Indjin (1964) is a multidisciplinary artist and activist currently based in Novi Sad, Serbia. Her artistic research and anthropological methodologies are focused on the field of personal-oral- histories, gender, socio-political roles, and people with different abilities. She teaches a direction of experimental theatre practices and has developed her own methods. Her teaching methodologies obtain a non-linear approach and interdisciplinarity. Apart from her extensive work in countries where she lived (Yugoslavia, Italy, Slovenia, and The Netherlands), she gave workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances, and individual and group sessions in Germany, Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Poland, Italy, Iceland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, and India. The War in Yugoslavia intensified her inner questions and the need to deal with the understanding of the human psyche and the healing of emotional wounds, questioning the importance and role of art for the individual and the community. For that matter, she (with then colleagues), founded the Chamber Theater of Music (in 1989) – a performing arts laboratory for producing non-conventional arts.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
“I’ve entered the public space as a visual artist/scene designer dealing with photography, slides, and video as well as costume design. Later, I became more interested in traditional visual arts and a little bit later started directing full-length theater performances, happenings, and other forms of performing arts.
The biggest inspiration and experiences for my research related to personal and group transformation through arts I got through the theory and practice of works/methods of Gurdjieff, Peter Brook, Grotowsky, Feldenkrais, Jung, Tatsumi-Kazuo, Alexander, Moreno, Schlemmer, Dunkan, Reich-Loven, Vicharova, Rainer, Kovac, Ladik, Monk and Spollin. But, also practicing Dru Yoga, Chi Gong, Secret Dance, Butoh, Balkan traditional dance & singing, Free Dance and Thai&Yumeiho&Reiki & Lomi Lomi massages were very important inspirations for developing my own methods and instruments I use in my arts and the workshops.”
“My profession is the business of human rehabilitation..” (Tatsumi Hijikata).
“I needed to invent names for my professions in the world that insist on ‘precise’ entry. But today, the names of professions have very narrow meanings because they refer to and indicate narrowly specialized (fragmented) professions or their names are so general that their meanings are very wide. Both cases are not precise and useful at the moment. That is how I feel, forgive me, if that is offensive or contradicts your opinion.”
*cotamegute (pronunciation: kotemeguta) is my word for all disciplines I am practicing.
